Home insurance protects your home and its belongings. It can cover the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home if it’s damaged by things like a fire, a storm or a flood.

It can cover the cost of replacing the items in your home if they need repairing or replacing due to damage, or if they are stolen.

There are two types of home insurance

Building and contents insurance

Building insurance covers damage to the physical structure of your home and any permanent fittings or fixtures.

Contents insurance covers the contents within your home against loss, damage or theft.

You can take each out as a separate policy or as a combined policy from the same company.It is usually a condition of the mortgage that you have Building Insurance in place when you take out any type of mortgage or remortgage.

Building insurance

Buildings insurance covers the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home if it is damaged by an insured event, such as fire, flood, storm, subsidence, vandalism, or escape of water. It also covers permanent fixtures and fittings, such as windows, doors, pipes, wiring, and fitted kitchens and bathrooms. 

Buildings insurance usually covers the following:

The structure of your home, including walls, roof, floors, ceilings, foundations, and garages.

Permanent fixtures and fittings, such as windows, doors, pipes, wiring, and fitted kitchens and bathrooms.

Outbuildings, such as sheds, greenhouses, and garages.

Boundary walls, fences, gates, driveways, paths, and patios.

Swimming pools, hot tubs, solar panels, and wind turbines.

Buildings insurance does not cover the following:

Wear and tear or gradual deterioration of your home.

Damage caused by poor maintenance or DIY disasters.
